Elphinstone Reef by Speed Boat / Boat
From: 90 €
Elphinstone Reef is one of the most famous and exciting diving destinations in the world and offers some of the best scuba diving in the Red Sea!
The reef which is originally called “Shaab Abu Hamra” is located 10 km offshore and about 30 km from Marsa Alam. This dive site is famous for its wonderful drift dives along deep steep walls. It gives you the possibility to encounter a variety of Red Sea inhabitants like hardly somewhere else. The coral reef is really beautiful and unspoiled, soft corals are waving in the changing currents. Large fan-shaped gorgonians are quite spectacular and will leave you stunned.
This long, standalone, cigar-shaped reef in the open sea with plateaus in the northern and southern end is attracting thousands of divers every year. Exotic marine life and the bright, clear water with a visibility of minimum 30 meters make your dive a once in a lifetime experience.
The Elphinstone Reef is famous for being one of the few places in the Red Sea to encounter sharks on a regular basis. Best chances to dive with the Oceanic Whitetip Shark (also called Longimanus) are from October to December. These curious sharks are often seen close to the daily boats in a shallow depth swimming amongst the divers. The endangered species of Hammerhead sharks is usually encountered in greater depth, preferring colder water temperature and currents.
Manta Rays can be seen mainly from May to August. Tiger Sharks, Silky Sharks or Fox Sharks might also be spotted. Regular visitors are groups of Spinner dolphins joining the boats on their rides. Sea turtles and Napoleon fish are very common along the reef.
In addition to these Red Sea giants there are also plenty of pelagic fishes like Trevallies, Barracudas and Tunas you can see while hunting their prey. The reef life is teeming with myriads of fishes all around Shaab Abu Hamra.
Our trips to Elphinstone Reef are organized mainly by daily boat starting from Port Ghalib, from where we reach the spot within a two hour ride. Depending on the sea conditions and availability there is an additional option by speed boat, starting from the coast line right in front of the reef. The speedboat takes only 20 minutes to reach the dive site.
Scuba Diving in Elphinstone reef is reserved to experienced divers as changing currents can be very strong and you are diving in the open sea. Minimum level for this dive site is the Advanced Open Water Diver certificate and a minimum of 50 logged dives. Divers holding a lower level certification might join with a personal guide depending on their experience.
